Creating Your First Website - A Guide for College Students

If you’re new to website building and things of that nature, it might be tempting to throw your hands in the air and say it’s too difficult and just give up—but that’s not a good idea, because building a website can be one of the most rewarding things that you can do. It’s a great thing to learn a new technology and way to communicate, and it’s something that anyone can do. Sure, you might think this isn’t the case—especially when the word “anyone” is thrown around, but it’s true that anyone can do it (with a little learning and training of course).

Building a Website – Step 1

When building a website, it’s important to choose a domain name, and then get it registered. This doesn’t have to be an expensive thing—in fact, a lot of domain name registrars will allow you to register a domain name for less than 10 dollars per year, and some even give you a year free (or even a free domain name with a year of registration).

Step 2 – Getting Hosting for Your Website

Getting hosting for your website is pretty easy as a student. As is mentioned many times on this site, there are often colleges that will give you free web space since they are a nonprofit to hose a personal blog. If your college is one of those, then that’s all you need.

However, if you don’t have a free web space available through your college, then you’ll need to find hosting which typically costs $3-5 per month, so not too much in the long run.

Step 3 – Connecting Your Domain Name to the
Website

Once you have a domain name you need to connect it to a web server, which means that you need to point the DNS from your domain name to your web server. This can be done in the admin panel of your domain name registrar.

Step 4 – Build Your Website

Whether you want to use WordPress or another type of framework, you can start building up your site at this point. Take some time to make the design look nice, and have good amount of awesome content, and whatever else you’d like your site to have.

Once your site is done, you can connect with other college students, bloggers, etc., and keep building and working on the site as time goes on.
