WordPress Web Hosting for Students Explained

As mentioned in a previous article about nonprofit hosting for students, if you’re building a WordPress site, you’re going to need to do a little more work in terms of finding a good host (assuming that your college doesn’t offer free hosting of any kind as public or nonprofit colleges often do).

This means that you’re going to need to look at hosting companies that offer server-side scripting in order to handle PHP for WordPress. But the requirements for WordPress unfortunately don’t stop there as you’re also going to need a host that allows SQL databases. The way WordPress works is that it connects the PHP files to a SQL databased in order to create a CMS that manages posts and pages. This is an excellent system, especially because it’s free to download and use, but it does require web hosting that is a little more robust than the average.

Where Can Students Find Hosting Like This?

TWell, there are a variety of places, but generally speaking their college or university is one of the best places to look. Often times students are allowed to have a certain amount of free webspace that they can use in order to host a personal blog for free. If this isn’t an option, then using Amazon AWS and creating an EC2 instance is another affordable way to host WordPress, but it’s not necessarily the most cost-effective.

Really, when if comes to hosting WordPress as a student, it’s best to take a look at some of the lower-cost providers that offer resources like cPanel and other similar tools, and also providers that offer support because inevitably there will be something that comes up (especially with WordPress) where you’ll need to reach out to support because the site is down or there’s some other type of problem associated with the site, so having good support is very important.

That said, you can typically find hosting for less than five dollars per month, which is pretty cheap if you’re just looking to host a personal blog for school or for a college project.
