Student Web Hosting (Nonprofit)

If you’re a college student and looking to host a website, there are a lot of options but there may not be any that are affordable. The truth is that college students are on a very tight budget, and because of this, it’s not easy for them to always afford hosting, especially for hobby websites. This means that it’s worthwhile for students to look at lower cost options such as nonprofit web hosting. This type of hosting breaks down into a few categories.

Types of Nonprofit Hosting

First of all, nonprofit hosting doesn’t mean that it’s free—it may just be reduced-fee web hosting, which is fine for the budget of most students. There are some companies that cater to students and offer hosting that is very low-cost, but it really depends on what type of site that you’re trying to host too.

If you’re hosting a simple static website for a class you’re taking or as a personal blog, you can probably just drop that into an Amazon S3 bucket or a Microsoft Azure Blob and use that to serve your static files. However, if you’re hosting a larger site that requires dynamic scripting like PHP, you’ll need to upgrade to better hosting in order to make that work.

How Much Can a Student Expect to Pay to Host Their Personal Blog?

Again, this really depends on what type of site that you want to host. If you’re looking to host a personal blog, this could be done for pennies per month in an Amazon S3 bucket. If you’re looking to host a WordPress site or use some type of CMS that requires server-side processing, you’ll have to have more robust hosting, and that probably means somewhere in the neighborhood of $3-$5 per month at a minimum.

Can I Host a Website Using Resources From My School?

Sometimes this is possible, it all really depends on the school. Many schools give students access to free web hosting or a certain amount of web space they can use at no cost to them in order to host a personal blog or website. This is often a great thing when schools do this because students are able to host their site without having to pay anything. This is great because if helps them get their feet wet in the world of web design and hosting without having to spend money in case they don’t like it.

What’s The Best Route to Hosting a Website as a College Student?

This really depends on whether or not your school has hosting space that they provide for students at no cost. If they do, this is by far the best choice, however, if they don’t, then Amazon S3 is probably the next best option, and if that isn’t feasible, then choosing a $3-$5 per month hosting company is probably the next best choice.
